Biopesticides

Biopesticides are classed as types of pesticides "derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals." (EPA, 2016, What Are Biopesticides?, para. 1) These include mycoinsecticides (B. bassiana), plant-derived oils and their extracts (neem, azadirachtin), targeted strains of bacteria (Bti, Btk) and a number of other inorganic compounds like potassium bicarbonate.

Key Benefits:

  • Often only affect target pest and closely related organisms making them ideal for IPM programs.
  • Effective in small-quantities reducing effects to non-target organisms (pollinators, beneficial insects, etc.) caused by residual pollution.
  • Reduced residual impacts & use of conventional pesticides without sacrificing harvest yields.
