Root Maggots
Root maggots are the larval stage of several species of root maggot flies. In spite of being from several different species – they all look the same. Treatment for control is also the same. They are small, 1/3 to ¼ inch long, legless, white larvae. They feed underground and attack vegetable crops such as radish, carrots, turnip, and onions. They also like cole crops, including: cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale and broccoli.
They tunnel into the roots or the root crop itself and this can cause roots to rot. Plants that are infested will appear stunted, yellowed, and wilted. The adults are gay flies that look similar to common house flies. The female flies lay eggs in plant stems near the soil during the spring.
