Prevent & Treat Diseases Affecting Hemp & Cannabis Crops
Both hemp and cannabis are affected by diseases common to a number of other crops. These include powdery mildew, damping off in seedlings and Botrytis grey mold (bud rot). In many crops, aggressive preventive treatments may not be affordable and treatment is dictated by damage thresholds. In contrast, the value of hemp and particularly cannabis dictate that prevention be done in the most aggressive ways possible to minimize crop losses.
While there are limitations as far as what kinds of products can be applied to cannabis or hemp, the first step in disease control is always cultural. Since diseases favor certain conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.), consider how you are cultivating:
- Is there anything that might be creating favorable conditions for the disease?
- Are you noticing disease symptoms in one area, but not another?
- Are there diseases common in your area? If so, what makes them occur and how do you remedy the causes?
