Biofungicides
What is a biofungicide?
Biofungicides (biological fungicides) use beneficial microorganisms, like specialized bacteria and fungi, to combat disease. Their lack of unwanted impacts and general hardiness make them suitable alternatives to conventional fungicides in most growing environments. Biofungicides may suppress diseases in the following ways:
- Direct Competition – Biofungicides like Trichoderma species form protective barriers around roots preventing infection of the rhizosphere.
- Antibiosis – Biofungicides may produce antibiotics or other toxins that prevent pathogen growth.
- Predation/Parasitism – Some target pathogens, attack and feed on them.
- Induced Resistance – Triggers a systemic response in the plant, stimulating its own defense mechanisms.
