Phorodon cannabis

A widespread pest in areas where outdoor cannabis cultivation is common, the cannabis aphid (Phorodon cannabis) produces both winged and wingless forms. Coloration varies, especially outdoors where early season aphids range from creamy to pale yellow then shift to light green, light brown and even pale pink once shortened day lengths dictate it. Damage will be the same as other aphid species – reduced plant vigor, slowed growth, wilting and leaf yellowing. The honeydew they produce is also a concern as it can encourage fungal diseases like powdery mildew and sooty mold.

IPM Note: Because aphids typically reproduce asexually and give birth to live young, early identification and control is needed to limit pest numbers. This is especially important during summer months when aphid reproduction increases.

Cannabis Aphid Control: Check for honeydew and inspect new, succulent growth. "Cast skins", aphid remains after molting, are also a common sign used for diagnosing a problem.
