Horticultural Oils
Humans have been battling plant pests and diseases for millennia, inventing and using several tools to do so. Horticulture oils are a natural solution to control insects and invertebrates and prevent diseases from devastating crops and plants.
The use of horticulture oils dates back to the early 20th century when they were first developed to combat pest infestations in fruit trees. Initially, these oils were heavy and primarily used during dormant seasons to avoid damaging the plants. Over the years, advancements in formulation have led to lighter, more refined oils that can be safely applied throughout the growing season.
How They Work
Horticulture oils can be either petroleum-based or plant-based, but they work similarly. Spraying oils on insects creates a thin film over their bodies that blocks their spiracles or breathing pores, preventing them from obtaining oxygen. As a result, pests such as aphids, spider mites, and scale insects are effectively suffocated and killed.
Additionally, spraying horticulture oils on the foliage of plants can disrupt the feeding behavior of pests. The oil coating can interfere with the feeding processes of pests like aphids and other soft-bodied insects, leading to their starvation. Moreover, horticulture oils can impact the reproductive cycles of these pests by covering and smothering eggs, keeping them from hatching.
Types of Horticulture Oil
Horticulture oils come in different types, based on what they are made from and when to apply them. They can be sourced from mineral oils, plants (such as soybean, cottonseed, neem, etc), or fish oils.
The two types for application include dormant oils and summer oils.
Dormant oils are typically applied to trees and shrubs during their dormant season (late fall to early spring). These oils are heavier and more viscous, making them effective against overwintering pests and their eggs.
Summer oils are lighter and can be applied during the growing season. They control more active infestations of pests like spider mites, whiteflies, and aphids.
Benefits of Using Horticulture Oil
Horticulture oils are highly effective in controlling a wide range of pests. They target common garden and crop pests, including aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, scale insects, and some caterpillars.
In addition to pest control, horticulture oils play a crucial role in preventing plant diseases. They can inhibit the growth and spread of fungal spores, protecting plants from diseases such as powdery mildew, rust, and black spot. Proper application of horticulture oils creates a protective barrier on plant surfaces, reducing the likelihood of diseases.
Horticulture oils do a great job of protecting our plants and are safe for the environment and non-target organisms. They break down quickly and don't leave harmful residues. That way, beneficial insects, like bees and ladybugs, as well as birds and mammals, are safe from any harmful effects.
Horticulture oils offer a range of benefits that make them an excellent choice for integrated pest management and sustainable agriculture practices.
