Botrytis (Grey Mold)
Botrytis affects crops from strawberries and grapes to cannabis and hemp. Commonly called "grey mold", "bud rot" or "Botrytis blight", it prefers damp conditions and tends to infect weakened or wounded tissue. Hot, dry weather will halt growth. Wind and water are the main ways spores spread; however, Botrytis often overwinters on dead plant material like leaf litter, dropped fruit and/or infected mulch. Prevention and growing site maintenance is the best way to control Botrytis, so proactivity is key if conditions favor the disease.
Control of Botrytis:
- Manage environmental conditions that promote Botrytis growth. Ensure proper ventilation, sunlight and air flow in greenhouses or indoors. Overhead watering should be avoided in susceptible areas/crops.
- Sterilize tools, hardware and growing media in affected areas. An oxidizing cleaner like ZeroTol 2.0 is excellent for minimizing spores and mycelium overwintering or lying dormant - preventing further infection.
- Biological barriers (BotryStop) and biofungicides (Regalia) protect plants from Botrytis spores, reducing infection rates.
