Hydroponic & Soilless
Hydroponics, the cultivation of plants without using soil, is a form of horticulture that has been used for thousands of years. In Latin, the word "hydroponics" means "working with water" and that is the essence of how it works. In lieu of soil, water delivers the oxygen, hydration and nutrition that plants need. Nutrients are provided by water-based solutions that can be adapted to specific needs like plant species, growth stage and seasonal/environmental variables. Hydroponics works for most plants, but it is used primarily in vegetable and cannabis crops. When you grow hydroponically you skip the soil middleman, which means that plants receive their nutrition directly to their roots. They can grow faster, healthier and produce higher yields. While the system is based on water, hydroponics uses less water than traditional growing. It also allows for more plants to be cultivated in a smaller area that can be shielded from climatic conditions. These last two benefits are why many people believe that the ancient practice of hydroponics will become the future of food cultivation in an increasingly crowded world with fewer natural resources.
