Pre-Emergent Herbicides
Pre-emergent herbicides can be applied to the soil before your plants or weeds establish any roots. It's best to apply this kind of herbicide when you have a clean bed or growing substance, or in the early spring before any weeds have sprouted.
The herbicide works by inhibiting root growth or seed cell division. It won't work on existing weeds, but for only those that have yet begun to emerge. If you aren't sure if a weed has established roots in the soil, look for the second pair of leaves that have emerged. If you don't see them, the herbicide should still be effective.
Make sure to use the pre-emergent herbicide as the label instructs for the best and safest results.
