Single Ingredient Meals

Meal fertilizers are dry, often single-ingredient additives that can be added to soil mixes or incorporated with other dry fertilizers and top dressed. Common meals used as fertilizers are blood meal (high nitrogen), bone meal (high phosphorous, calcium) and kelp meal (low NPK, rich in minerals). Each of these contain unique benefits that may interest growers cultivating crops with specific needs. For example, a tomato grower who has experienced blossom end rot in past seasons may want to add bone meal to boost calcium levels in an effort to avoid it.

Many single ingredient meals provide a slow release of nutrient content instead of immediately available nutrients like you might get in a foliar feed. This makes them excellent for correcting long term nutrient deficiencies in the soil. Being plant or animal-based, meal fertilizers are biodegradable and many feed soil microorganisms as they break the meals down into plant-usable nutrients.
