Lace Bugs
Named for their lacy wings, lace bugs are common pests of ornamental trees and shrubs, preferring plants in sunny locations. They pierce leaves as they feed leading to stippling and in severe cases - chlorosis & premature leaf drop. Females lay partially embedded egg clusters, some of which overwinter. In warmer climates, lace bugs can have up to four generations per year.
Controlling Lace Bugs:
- Sharp blasts of water can dislodge adults and nymphs, deterring feeding. The Bug Blaster is a wand sprayer specifically designed for this - spraying a fine, high pressure mist for quick knockdown of garden pests.
- Assassin bugs, green lacewings, and minute pirate bugs are all predators of lace bugs. Preventive releases will reduce the chance of lace bugs being a major issue.
- Neem Oil sprays work as contact sprays, killing all life stages of lace bugs.
- Surround WP (kaolin clay) is an anti-feedant and plant protector that reduces feeding and egg-laying on foliage.
- Severe infestations can be knocked down with pyrethrin sprays.
