The hardy autumn variety has a very strong root system, which allows it to hold in the field better than others. It also matures faster than winter varieties (excellent for baby leeks) and can handle cold temperatures - all of which makes it the ideal addition to fall meals. These leeks are stout, with long, thick, uniform white stalks topped by dark green leaves. Although they grow large, they will not lose their mild flavor once mature. Certified organic.
Soil Temp. for Germination: 55-75°F
Days to Maturity: 95
Sowing Indoors: Start up to 100 seeds in a 4-6" pot 8-10 weeks before your last frost. Place in a warm location and keep moist. If you cannot transplant outside before the tops reach 5", then cut back the tops to 3".
Sowing Outdoors: Direct sow 2-4 seeds per inch into rich, well-drained garden soil after the danger of frost has passed.
Growing Tips: When using transplants, plant in the bottom of a 5" deep trench and fill in around the plants as they grow. This blanches the bottom few inches of the stalk.
