The origin of this lettuce variety is somewhat shadowy. Given that the name Italienischer means Italian in German, many believe that it comes from the northern Dolomite region of Italy bordering Switzerland and Austria. Allow plenty of room for these large leafed plants; they will be about 18" high and can spread to 2 feet in diameter. The beautiful bright green oak leaf shaped leaves will start out tightly bunched and then blossom out into large spikes. At full size, this lettuce will remain sweet and crunchy and each leaf will be large enough for a single serving salad. Italienischer can take heat without becoming bitter and is slow to bolt. Sow and enjoy this fabulous treat from spring into fall.
