Developed by Glenn Drowns back in the 70's in Northern Idaho, this modern heirloom is just what you need for areas with short, cool growing seasons. With their dark green rind and super-sweet, crunchy scarlet flesh, these melons resemble the traditional southern watermelon but are considerably smaller. At about 8" across and 3-15 lbs. in size, this is the perfect watermelon to keep in the refrigerator. If you harvest just before they ripen, they will finish off in storage and keep for up to 2 months. The rind of the Blacktail Mountain watermelon makes a sublime pickle!
