Description

NemAttack Steinernema feltiae Beneficial Nematodes are live microscopic organisms (non-segmented round worms) that occur naturally in soil throughout the world. The beneficial nematodes we sell are parasitic to insect pests that typically have a developing (larval or pupal) stage of life in the soil. They have been known to parasitize above ground stages of adults, nymphs and larvae. They will not harm mammals, aquatic life, birds, reptiles or amphibians. After being applied to the soil, the nematodes locate pests and enter through various body openings or directly through the body wall. Once inside, the nematodes produce bacteria that is injected into the pest's blood.

Beneficial Nematodes release the bacteria in order to create food and a hospitable environment for their own reproduction. As the food resources within the dead pest become scarce, the nematodes exit and immediately begin searching for a new host. As long as there is a suitable host, they will continue to survive and parasitize.

Instructions

If you are a first time user of beneficial nematodes, please follow the illustrated application instructions for use with a hose end sprayer. If you have questions, please call us at 1-800-827-2847.

For most applications, beneficial nematodes should be mixed with water and sprayed directly into the soil. Hose-end sprayers and pump sprayers work best, but nematodes can also be applied with a watering can, through irrigation and fertigation systems, into certain hydroponics media, and by syringe injection.

What's The Application Rate?

The exact mix rate varies based on the type of sprayer used and the user's speed of movement through the area. The key is to spread the nematode solution as evenly as possible over the full area being treated. We recommend spraying down the area with just water using the sprayer for application to determine roughly how many tanks will be needed for full coverage.

When Should They Be Applied?

  • Apply when soil temperatures are above 42°F.
  • Apply early in the morning or predusk when temperatures are cooler and the sun is not so bright.

It is best to make at least two applications, separated by 7-10 days to stagger the life cycles of the nematodes and ensure complete coverage. In cases of severe infestations, applications should be made every 7-10 days or until infestation subsides.

Can I Keep Nematodes In Water Until I Apply Them?

Only mix up what you are going to apply at that time. While some nematodes are aquatic, insect-parasitic nematodes are not. Do not leave the nematode/water mixture sitting for more than 2 hours as death can occur. Please call us at 1-800-827-2847 if you have questions about using nematodes in hydroponic environments. For best results, always apply beneficial nematodes as soon as possible after mixing.

How Long Can Nematodes Be Kept Before Use?

Beneficial Nematodes should be used as soon as possible. Because they are living organisms it is best to store them unopened for no longer than 2 weeks in a refrigerator. DO NOT FREEZE. Once opened, use entire container within the same day.

Should The Soil Be Moist After The Nematode Application?

The soil should be moist at time of application and lightly watered immediately after application. After application, check the application area regularly and water as needed to maintain soil moisture. Generally speaking, water every 3-4 days if rainfall does not occur.

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

After application, the nematodes locate pests and enter the pests through body openings or through the body wall. This may take 7-10 days. Once inside, the nematodes inject bacteria that kill the pest insect within 48-72 hours by causing blood poisoning. Maximum control occurs over 2-4 weeks.

How Often Should Nematodes Be Applied?

Nematodes are recommended for use whenever larvae or grubs are present. Generally, this is during the spring and fall months. Because larvae feed on plant roots, beneath the soil surface, severe damage can be done before realizing there is a problem. Look for signs of an adult insect, such as leaf-notching. If adult insects are present, their eggs will be hatching soon. Keep in mind, one application may not eradicate a population of insects that has become established over a period of years.

Will Nematodes Live Through The Winter?

In general, harsh winter weather in most parts of the country guarantees a significant decline in the population of the nematodes. In most cases, nematodes (just like insects) will become dormant during cold weather. Any survivors would be few in number to provide adequate insect control. If your insect pest returns the following year, another application may be necessary.

When Nematodes Are Applied To One Area Will They Move To Other Areas?

Nematodes are microscopic in size and have limited range of horizontal movement. They move vertically into the soil until they find a pest to infect. As a result, thorough coverage of the area is important for achieving control.

NemAttack Didn't Work
Apr 17, 2022  |  By Matthew Maxwell
Bought NemAttack for a fungus gnat problem with my indoor lemon tree but did not work.... Disappointed!

NemAttack Sf works!
Apr 15, 2022  |  By Kris Christian
I've tried neem oil, insecticides, MosquitoBits, diatomaceous earth, everything to get rid of fungus gnats that arrived in potting soil from Home Depot. The NeemAttack Sf knocked the population down to about 1% of what it used to be, thank heavens! Will order one more set to finish the rest of the gnats for good.

Mar 21, 2022  |  By Stacy Beth White
Unfortunately this did not work out for me. I followed directions to a T and called customer service about this and they said to give it some more time. I did just that and forgot about even having them in my soil because there was still so many gnats emerging from the soil every day.
Owner Response: Hi Stacy, It sounds like you have a pretty severe infestation! Multiple applications may be needed or a stronger soil drench (Botanigard or pyretherin depending on your situation). Feel free to call and speak to a representative if you'd like to discuss other options for your infestation.

Finally, something that works!
Jan 31, 2021  |  By Sarah P
I have nothing negative to say about this product! It came in a small container, was packaged in a protective bubble sleeve, and then in a larger envelope. I used the nematodes on my houseplants and was a little worried about the application because instructions are generally written as if you are watering a flower bed. I just decided to pour half of the contents in my watering can (saved the second half for the following week) and watered all 16 of my plants from the top--even for plants I normally bottom water for as the nematodes need to work at the top of the soil to stop my gnat problem. Within a few days I already saw a decrease in the number of fungus gnats and by my second watering I didn't actually see any more gnats! I continued with the second application anyway just to be sure though. I couldn't recommend this product more, I only wish I would have purchased it sooner because I spent weeks applying stick traps and neem oil to my plants and was frustrated how I could never stop them. If I ever get another infestation, this will be the FIRST thing I purchase.
Owner Response: We're glad to hear Beneficial Nematodes were effective AND easy to use. Keep in mind, once the package is opened the viability decreases. We recommend using the entire package the same day it's opened. Let us know if you need any help in the future.

Beneficial Nematodes
Jan 16, 2021  |  By Melissa
I ordered beneficial nematodes to address my newly replanted houseplants and these work really well. They do take several days to start noticing a reduction in fungus gnats, but given a little longer than what most packaging says, they work like a charm. If you want to see an immediate fix while you wait, the yellow sticky stakes can help with the ones already flying around but the nematodes really address the root of the problem which is the larvae in the soil.

Great product. Came as ordered and was timely. Worked PERFECTLY for the thrip infestation I had in my indoor garden. It not only handled the infestation fast, the thrips never came back. I used a slightly heavy dose which is still a cheap remedy. I now order them for maintenance every cycle.

Waste of time and money, did not work for fungus gnats.
Owner Response: Hi David. We're sorry you did not see the control you were looking for. Depending on infestation level, you may need higher application rates or multiple applications.

Maybe I did it wrong?
Oct 12, 2020  |  By Michael Hunley
I applied this according to directions for control of sod webworms, but after about 2 weeks I seem to have just as many if not more of the adult moths flying around the yard? Maybe I did something wrong?
Owner Response: Hi Michael. I have forwarded your concern to Customer Service. We would like to work with you to get the control you are looking for. Some pests do requires higher application rates or multiple applications depending on level of infestation.

Fungus Gnats Reduced, Great Customer Service!
Oct 9, 2020  |  By Cecelia
I got these nematodes for use on my 200+ containerized houseplants after getting tired of fungus gnats flying in my face while I was trying to read/cook/live my life. I tried Mosquito Bits initially, and those didn't get rid of them, although I believe they may have reduced them for a while. I ended up scraping the Mosquito Bits out of my soil after noticing that they caused mold to grow on top of the soil. I decided to go with nematodes next, but the written instructions weren't all that clear about how many nematodes to buy for my application and how exactly to apply them. With 200+ plants to treat, I didn't have time to guess. So I called up customer service and had a great, informative conversation about what to do and what to buy. I learned that I only needed one box of 5 million, as well as how to apply them using my watering can. Apparently, container plants only need a little bit of the mixture sprinkled onto pre-moistened soil, and it's not as critical to get a certain mixing ratio between the nematodes and the water. So, it took a chunk of time to measure the number of watering cans I would need to cover all my houseplants and to then repeat that process to apply the nematodes, but three weeks later I have not noticed many, if any, gnats in my face. The one thing I wish I would have asked the customer service rep is how to balance keeping the nematodes alive with the health of the plant, given that I have a lot of desert plants in my collection who prefer dry soil. My understanding is that, for the nematodes to survive, the soil must be kept "moist" for several weeks after application. However, this is not always feasible with certain plants. Overall, I think this product has helped a lot. I am hoping to stave off thrips this winter, as well, with my new nematode friends!

Nematodes are a Homeowner's Best Friend
Aug 7, 2020  |  By Eric Thompson
We have terrible gnats in north Florida during the summer. I spray the nematodes around the yard in the early summer right after an evening rainstorm. I use a pump-up hand sprayer and take off the mister so its more of a stream as to not damage the nematodes. The pool and backyard area have been gnat free all summer. When I go for a walk / jog around the neighborhood I run into swarms of gnats elsewhere. Nothing in and around my property. I just wish there were nematodes that attacked mosquitoes.

termites in my tomatoes
Jul 23, 2020  |  By Bruce Eckerman
The Mich State Ag Cooperative people didn't believe that I had eastern subterranean termites in the stalks of my garden tomatoes until I sent them a picture of one looking at me from inside a stalk that I cut in half last year. I've had a problem with sickly/wilting tomato plants for 3-4 years now. After researching this, I applied both Sr and Sf nematodes to my raised garden soil. It took about 10 days, but then I noticed the tomatoes had stopped wilting soon after sunrise, and now, 3 weeks later, they are doing well, and I'm starting to see blossoms as I write this, 7.23.20. 4-stars because the Arbico people didn't send me instructions on how to apply the Sr nematodes (different than the other ones), and I had to have them send me more with the proper application instructions included. A prior application over 3 weeks of their Triple Threat package nematodes in June didn't seem to impress the termites, but perhaps I applied them too early, don't know.

It's such a pleasure to reach someone on the phone who actually knows what they're talking about and how to do their job. I was coached on the application of the nematodes. The product arrived exactly on time. Follow-up perfect. Thanks. I've already recommended Arbico to a friend, and she ordered, too.

I ripped up all my onions due to an onion maggot infestation. Desperate to save my garlic which was just beginning to show signs, I ordered nematodes based on online research. My mom and sister did the same (all of us from this site). Its made a world of difference. My garlic is saved. We're all happy and amazed. Nematodes came fast with easy instructions. Highly recommend.

Works great. I planted my first round of bush beans before applying the nematodes, and less than 10% sprouted. Over 75% sprouted after applying nematodes. Will definitely use again!

War on root maggots: success!
Jun 19, 2020  |  By Abby
I made the mistake of planting too soon after rototilling a new garden patch, and most everything I planted was attacked and destroyed by root maggots. This infestation was seriously bad: 27 out of 30 onion seedlings destroyed, only 4 peas out of 30 ft row came up, etc. I was despairing over a solution when I learned about beneficial nematodes. The product arrived fairly quickly and the price was good - $30 more than covered my 800 sq ft garden. I applied on a cloudy and intermittently rainy evening. A week later I replanted and everything has come up perfectly - not a maggot in sight! An added bonus is finding dying and dead cutworms, grubs, and wireworns. I'm so pleased that I may do a preventative treatment before I plant next spring. Thank you for saving my garden!!

NemAttack worked for me

I had a small fungus gnat issue on about 15 plants. I used twice the recommended dose but in one application my fungus gnats where gone with in two weeks. I was quite impressed. I don't usually take the time to write reviews but I had to for these nematodes because they worked for me.

Seems Good, Will Update
Dec 28, 2018  |  By Chris B
So far so good. I got these SF Nematodes to help curb a fungus gnat issue. I have only seen one flying around since introducing these to the pots, at an absurd rate. They were rated for 1600 sq ft and I used them in four 3G pots. A bit overkill but it seems to have curbed them with no other type of preventative in use. Only one adult has been spotted since use and it was promptly exterminated.

Great product!
Jul 15, 2018  |  By Bob
We use Triple Threat annually, and typically knock the tick population down to 10% of before treatment. Triple Threat goes after many other threats, so it goes over the whole property, including pastures and veggie gardens and just into the woods. This was a follow up aimed mostly at ticks, but it was great to get it on a sale.

A good defense.

Gardening like team sports requires a good defense. NemAttack is definitely part of my arsenal to ensure a bug and tick free summer.

Rapid knockdown of gnats/root aphids.
Apr 9, 2018  |  By John Lafollette
Beneficial nematodes SF knocked down a medium-heavy infestation of gnats and root aphids in about 2 weeks, but did not eradicate them completely. I only see one or a few flying things now. May need one or more follow-up treatments and/or soil drench of some kind. But the rapid improvement was remarkable. To get that same result from sprays or drenches would be a ton of labor and not as effective and more expensive. Very impressed - the only reason not 5 star is because not total eradication. Excellent product.

Never fails each year I get onions maggots after planting my onion sets.. This year I nipped them in the bud before they got started with the beneficial nematodes. Thank you Arbico for providing exactly what I needed. You're a life saver!
Owner Response: Great to hear Cindi! It's about to be grub season here in Tucson.
