Biochar is the product of biomass (a variety of plant materials like hardwoods, grasses, agricultural and forestry residues) that has been heated in a low-oxygen process known as pyrolysis. Through the pyrolysis process, the physical and chemical properties of the organic plant material is transformed into the charcoal-like, porous and carbon-rich product known as biochar. Best results are achieved when adding this product to you soil at least 5-7 days BEFORE planting. However, Harris Horticultural Charcoal can be used at any time in the planting process.
- Optimal ratio for most gardeners is 5-10% biochar in the top 6 inches of their soil. (1 part biochar to 9 parts planting soil)
- This product is not intended as a soil substitute.
Indoor Plants (container plants, seeds, cuttings, transplants):
Use a small rake or spoon and hand-mix this product around the plant within your desired container. For best results, add close to the root zone. You can also just layer a light dusting on the top and water in as usual.
Outdoor Plants (gardens, bedding plants, ornamentals):
Use your conventional tiller and rake and till directly into the soil. Adding more over time can increase product performance.
Trees and Shrubs:
Best when applied to the root zone area. Rake in and water as desired.
Compost Mix:
Mix as needed within your compost process - use as you would your final compost.
