No matter where you live in the continental United States, there is a Cucumber Beetle or Corn Rootworm that is ready and eager to dine on your crops. The two common types of these beetles are the Diabrotica and Acalymma species and this trap kit will address 5 Diabrotica and 2 Amalymma specific species in these two families (it is not for Diabrotica balteata). These small (about 9 mm. long) beetles have an affinity for cucurbit vegetables (cucumbers, squash, etc.) and corn, but are not shy about moving onto other plants if those are not available.

  • These pests lay their eggs in cracks in the soil or under the leaf surface of plants. In 5-9 days they begin hatching and, once hatched, the larvae will feed on plant roots and tunnel through stems.
  • Larvae continue to feed for 2-3½ weeks until they are fully developed, at which time they will pupate back into the soil.
  • Pupation takes 4-10 days and then adults emerge to begin another cycle of mating, laying eggs and producing larvae.
These adults are also voracious plant eaters and can also severely damage plants by scarification of fruits and defoliation. In addition to plant damage, Cucumber Beetles present a disease threat to plants. They are known to vector viral diseases in beans and plants damaged by these beetles and their offspring are considerably more susceptible to Fusarium and other fungal diseases.

Protecting your crops from Cucumber Beetles requires a concerted effort and dedicated monitoring. This trap kit is your first step. It will help you determine if you have this pest, if so, how many and it begins the process of reducing pest reproduction. Traps should be maintained throughout the growing season as a tool to monitor how effective your pest management and/or insecticide practices are. Deploy traps early in the season and before there is a major infestation. Plants should be inspected regularly for insect activity. Growing areas should be keep as clean as possible; this make inspection and monitoring easier and deprives the beetles of habitat. Floating row crops will protect seedlings and new plantings and kaolin clay Surround WP can discourage adult feeding. Beneficial insects can be a useful tool; Ladybugs, Green Lacewings all feed on the various life stages of these beetles. Beneficial nematodes like NemaSeek (Hb) will go after the pupal stage. Sprays and insecticides that contain Spinosad, Pyrethrin and Azadirachtin can also be used for direct control, but use caution with them if you have already released beneficial insects. Although there is some chance that beneficial insects may become ensnared on the yellow sticky trap, the risk to beneficials is generally low. It is certainly a much lower risk than if toxic pesticides were used to kill the beetles.

The lure is effective for 45 days. If the trap becomes covered with insects or other debris before that time, remove the lure and attach it to a fresh trap. When the lifespan of the lure is complete and the season is still active, replace lure and sticky trap with new ones. Replacement lures (SKU# 1254241) and sticky traps (SKU# 1254255) are available.

Results may vary due to seasonal changes, insect pest population variations, natural predator populations, correct trap installation, proper lure storage and weather extremes, disruption, damage and/or contamination due to chemical sprays, pets, children, sprinklers or other unforeseen events.

General Instructions:

  • Keep lures inside sealed packets until ready to sue.
  • Handle with clean hands or implements.
Hanger instructions:
  • Attach a single hanger to the top of a sticky trap. Use 2 hangers in windy areas or to hang trap horizontally.
  • Quickly peel release paper down diagonally.
How to prepare a foil pouch lure:
  • Find the removable side of the foil pouch containing lure. Peel that layer off completely and discard.
  • Do not puncture the remaining sealed pouch that contains the coaster lure.
  • Do not remove the large round coaster lure from the pouch.
  • The clear layer of the pouch is a slow release material that allows the scent to gradually escape into the air.
Attaching the lure:
  • Method #1: Make a kink in 1 hanger and push the end of the hanger through the slit top of the foil lure. Slide lure down to the kink.
  • Method #2: Use a paperclip (not included) to attach the lure directly to the trap.
How to deploy the trap:
  • Place traps close to individual plants or crop rows. Hang them from branches, a garden stake or from a rope strung between rows.
  • Check trap weekly for beetles.
  • The lure is effective for 45 days. If the lure has not expired when a trap becomes saturated with insects or debris, move it to a new trap.

Results may vary due to seasonal changes, insect pest population variations, natural predator populations, correct trap installation, proper/improper lure storage, weather extremes, disruption of the trap by children, pets or sprinklers, damage and/or contamination due to chemical sprays and other unforeseen events.

Did not work well
Jun 28, 2024  |  By Marlin
These traps did not work well for my western spotted cucumber beetle problem. 10 traps were put up in a 3000 sq. ft. area. We caught a total of 6 beetles in two weeks. Beetles were devastating plants within feet of traps, the lure didn't seem to work. Will not be buying in the future.

Disappointed

I was very disappointed with this product. I have used these in the past and have been very satisfied. They had little to no smell and discolored. i contacted customer service, no warranty.

Doesn't work
Jul 3, 2022  |  By Anne H
Put them.out yesterday, literally watched cucumber beetles land on the trap and walk off. The trap may be effective, except the sticky part is t strong enough to hold anything more than a knat. Finally pushed a better down into the glue.....he escaped also. Lure seems somewhat effective. I saw 2 beetles in first hour of watching it.

Catches more pollinators than cucumber beetles
Oct 10, 2021  |  By Brittany Anderson
I bought these sticky traps/lures in the summer and the company has changed the sticky yellow trap since then. I'm not a fan of their change because it caught more pollinators than it did cucumber beetles. I watched cucumber beetles walk right off of the sticky trap. The lure works well and I can still smell the odor, despite being rained on and about a month going by. I do not foresee myself buying these again because they have done more damage than good in my garden.

Didn't get the right bugs trapped.
Jun 23, 2021  |  By Beth
I'm not sure if my timing was off or what but this trap definitely got some bugs stuck to its yellow paper, it's just that hardly any of them were the cucumber beetle (dots or stripes) that I was going for.

Caught everything but Cucumber beetles
Aug 16, 2020  |  By Susan M
I bought 2 traps in order to catch Cucumber Beetles specifically. I placed them where the Cucumber beetles were but I saw only one land on it. I checked back 30 minutes later and it had walked off the sticky paper. Over the course of a month I noticed many other different insects get stuck but not one cucumber beetle. I would not recommend this product for that use.

An improvement
Jul 20, 2019  |  By Bob Chapin
These scent lures have increased the number of cucumber beetles appearing on my sticky traps, which is, after all, just the point. There are still some beetles on the melon plants, but we'd expect only the males (?) to be attracted to the lures. Still, any males that get out of circulation is that many fewer eggs I have to deal with. These are easy to use, and seemingly effective. I would recommend 'em.
