Nolo Bait is a spreadable bait made from wheat bran coated with Nosema locustae, a target-specific pathogen. Easy to apply, Nolo Bait is harmless to humans, pets, birds, beneficial insects and other wildlife. Use it on your lawn and garden, near greenhouses and any other growing areas affected by grasshopper damage.

How it Works:

Nolo Bait infects grasshoppers and Mormon Crickets with Nosema locustae, a naturally occurring protozoan. It infects all life stages of the pests, but is most effective when ingested by young grasshoppers (1st/2nd instars, 1/4"-1/2" long). After eating, Nolo Bait creates a disease within the grasshoppers (and Mormon Crickets) that is pest-specific. You can identify which grasshoppers have been infected by the following:

  • Eye color turns from dark brown to a cloudy white color.
  • Activity decreases and grasshoppers often fall on their side when landing.
  • The abdomen of infected individuals turn a creamy-white color with heavy infection.
  • Dead grasshoppers may cling to plant stalks with evidence of cannibalism.
Infection and sickness begin as soon as the bait is ingested, with death in 3-6 weeks. Juveniles will succumb sooners than older grasshoppers (third instars). The insect pathogen multiplies in infected grasshoppers and passes from grasshopper to grasshopper throughout the season.

This Product Controls These Pests or Diseases: Grasshoppers, Mormon Crickets

For use on plants grown for other than commercial or research purposes, which may include home fruit or vegetable gardens.

Application Procedures:

Do not apply product in a manner that would allow it to come into contact with any fruit or vegetables. Strictly follow the Application Instructions outlined below.

Lawns:

Apply to lawn at a minimum rate of five (5) teaspoons per 100 square feet by hand, shaker can or spreader.

Gardens:

Apply to garden at a minimum rate of five (5) teaspoons per 100 square feet by only using any of the following methods:

  • Soil-directed applications by hand, shaker can or spreader around and adjacent to all plants.
  • Hand, shaker can or spreader applications to garden when no above-ground fruit or vegetables are present (usually pre-bloom). Hand, shaker can or spreader applications to garden after fruit or vegetables have been removed.

Apply bait around the perimeter of garden areas as a buffer against migrating grasshoppers.

Storage:

Do not contaminate water, food or feed by storage or disposal. Store in original container in a cool, dry location. Optimal storage temperature is 42°F. For best results, use before 13 weeks after formulation.

Long term control measure
Jan 17, 2021  |  By jill streit
I began with NOLO in summer of 2019 with some reduction in numbers, but pests were adults at that point. Spring 2020, I applied NOLO as soon as available. Knockdown on tiny nymphs was excellent. I applied again as I would seen new outbreaks of tiny nymphs. Grasshopper adult population was a tiny fraction of what is was in previous years. Buy this product with confidence, but with understanding that it is most effective on 1st instars and repeated applications are necessary.
Owner Response: Great advice Jill! Nolo bait (nosema locustae) is MOST effective on young grasshoppers. We expect our first batch of 2021 Nolo Bait in March/April. Stay tuned!

All Natural

Been using Nolo Bait for years, no poison, no harm to nature. Always buy fresh product for best results. Live next to open farm land, every year there are fewer grasshoppers. Kills the small ones outright, over half in will not grow wings because he is sterile. They lay their eggs in bare soil spots, cover these areas with mulch or compost. Trying to buy some, now, but too early.
Owner Response: Thanks Gary! Yes, we usually get our first batch for the season in March/April. Stay tuned and keep an eye out for our notices.

Fantastic

Arbico Organics has been our mainstay during this year's grasshopper invasion. They have been prompt to respond with our NoLo orders and helpful on the phone. Hopefully we won't have another year this bad in the future, but even if we get a moderate outbreak, Arbico will be our first go-to.

This works! It is not a quick kill solution but it doesn't poison your ground or plants or kill the wonderful beneficial insects. I highly recommend NOLO BAIT!

Thank you!

I've ordered from Arbico Organics several times now, and every time has been easy, with fast shipping, excellent customer service, and quality product that works. I look forward to future purchases! Thank you!

Great company
Jun 24, 2020  |  By Nancy Oswald
My experience was fantastic especially with the phone service. Every contact made on the phone was helpful and included all the information needed with all questions answered. The website, not so much. It might have been our slow internet, but every time I ordered, I had to go through the form again because of a glitch. The worst one was our billing address ( a PO Box) is different than our shipping address. It kept defaulting back and it wasn't satisfied until I settled for putting shipping addy in both places. Thanks so much for help with our extensive NOLO orders this year!

Really good stuff for controlling grasshoppers, especially if you put it out when grasshoppers are less than an inch long.

Kind of pricey, but worth it. Had a bad grasshopper problem 10 years ago, started using the nolo bait, only see 1 or 2 a year. Easy to use and nontoxic to my dogs and me. A fine product!

5 lbs was a lot of bait-a little goes a long way. i wanted to ensure the pesky grasshoppers were not going to eat my veggie seedlings. So far so good.

I have now been using this for three years and it has kept the grasshoppers population under control in the areas that I spread the Nolo Bait. I put it out starting in May and then monthly thru September.

Nolo bait seems to work well at controlling grasshoppers. I noticed a decrease in numbers and they are moving slowly as it has taken effect.

Great grasshopper deterrent!

Love this pet friendly, kid-friendly product! It's very easy to apply, non-toxic, non-smelly, and environmentally friendly. I live next to a forested area so have tons of grasshoppers in some years. My lawn is overrun with them and they eat all my foliage, which makes my yard look terrible every summer. After applying NoloBait, they are vastly decreased if not eliminated altogether. Good Job Arbico!!

I understand that it takes a couple of seasons but I am happy with this product I put it around the inside base of the greenhouse. It is not near any food items.

It definitely slowed grass hoppers down, I can step on them. Before you couldn't even get close. Very expensive. And I dont think you can store it for next year.

Great customer service!

Our product was no longer available in the size requested. Someone contacted me to let me know the substitution on sizes for the same price. Nice that companies still serve their customers and the customers needs.

Hope it Works!

We had a grasshopper infestation of biblical proportion last year, and spread Nolo bait in late summer, and again this spring. We won't know the results for a while. We could have bought this from an Amazon seller, but the people at Arbico are so knowledgeable and helpful, and they shipped the next day. I will always order direct from the store.
Owner Response: Thank you for the kind words! Nolo Bait is a fantastic product and helps control mole crickets as well. Let us know when you are grasshopper free!

Worked great
Jul 14, 2015  |  By Steve
Lost an entire hedge to grasshoppers last year. Florida grows big ones. At the first sign of juveniles this year I used Nolo Bait. Didn't see any grasshoppers at all. Newly replanted hedge wasn't touched.

Great product!

I am trying to go organic with a flower garden I am growing in the middle of the Upper Peninsula woods. In 2013 the grasshoppers made my life miserable. As if the snow shoe hares and deer were not enough. I tried this product in 2014 a little late in the season but none the less the population declined. I'm applying again and anticipate further reduction. The product is easy to use, effective and safe. What else could you want?

Great Product
Mar 22, 2014  |  By Liz
We used this in the summer of 2012 because the previous 2 years we had grasshoppers eating everything including the rhubarb and horseradish. In 2013 we had a few grasshoppers, but not like the snowstorm from the grass in 2011-2012. A great product and safe for our dogs, too.
