Excellent grasshopper and cricket control approved for NOP certified organic production!
Nolo Bait is a spreadable bait made from wheat bran coated with Nosema locustae, a target-specific pathogen. Easy to apply, Nolo Bait is harmless to humans, pets, birds, beneficial insects and other wildlife. Use it around crops, near greenhouses and any other growing areas affected by grasshopper damage. Get rid of locusts in one simple application!
How it Works: Nolo Bait infects and kills grasshoppers, locusts and crickets with Nosema locustae, a naturally occurring protozoan. It infects all life stages of the developing pests, but is most effective when ingested by young grasshoppers (1st/2nd instars, 1/4"-1/2" long). After eating, Nolo Bait creates a disease that is pest-specific. Infected grasshoppers can be identified by:
- Eye color turns from dark brown to a cloudy white color.
- Activity decreases and grasshoppers often fall on their side when landing.
- The abdomen of infected individuals turn a creamy-white color with heavy infection.
- Dead grasshoppers may cling to plant stalks with evidence of cannibalism.
Death may occur in 1-3 weeks in juvenile grasshoppers. Third instars or older may take more time to die. The insect pathogen multiplies in infected grasshoppers and passes from grasshopper to grasshopper throughout the season.
Grasshoppers typically lay eggs in Southern exposure locations in hilly, sandy soil. Once hatched, they travel to their food source (your garden or farm). Head them off by applying Nolo Bait as a barrier about 1 foot wide, or by broadcasting product in and around areas to be protected.
In most cases, 50% of the existing population will die in 2-4 weeks. Infected survivors eat 75% less than healthy grasshoppers and lay fewer eggs. Heavy infestations may require a higher application rate and/or repeat applications.
