Milky Spore is available in 2 formulations. This granular formulation can be applied with a spreader and take 6 treatments (across 2 years) to achieve guaranteed control. The Milky Spore powder formulation requires only a single application for 10 year control.*
Milky Spore contains spores of the bacteria Paenibacillus popilliae (formerly Bacillus popillae), which work specifically against the grub stage of the Japanese beetle (Popilia japonica). It poses no threat to people, animals, plants or beneficial insects. When Milky Spore is introduced into the soil, it will lie dormant until grubs begin feeding on roots where the bacteria is present. Once ingested, the spore multiplies inside the grub with a single spore creating up to 3 billion new spores in each host grub. These spores kill Japanese Beetle grubs in about a week after infection. As the grub decomposes, the billions of spores it contained are released back into the soil to start the whole process again. Over time, Milky Spore fills out the soil creating a soil environment that Japanese beetles simply cannot survive in.
Milky Spore's effectiveness can be enhanced by the use of NemaSeek beneficial nematodes. They are unharmed by the infective bacteria and help spread it as the nematode moves through the soil pursuing grubs, weevils and larvae. Apply Milky Spore dry, then water in the NemaSeek for complementary control of grubs.

This Product Controls These Pests or Diseases: Japanese Beetles Grubs (Popillia japonica)
Milky Spore Granular is formulated to be used with a Drop type spreader. Refer to the product label on the bag or to the manufacturer's label under the DOCS tab and use the specified drop spreader setting. For best results, apply early in the season before grubs hatch.
- Fill the drop spreader with the Milky Spore Granular.
- Apply uniformly over the treatment area. To be sure you cover the entire area uniformly, first treat the border of the lawn and then fill in the center. Make parallel passes with the spreader, walking at a steady pace to ensure even distribution of the granules.
- Spread over the treatment area at the rate of 1 lb per 350 sq. ft or 20 lbs per 7,000 sq. ft.
- Water the treated area and/or apply beneficial nematodes within 24 hours of application to soak spores into the soil.
- Do not mow the lawn until spores are watered into the soil.
To reach maximum spore levels in the soil and achieve best grub control,
Milky Spore Granular should be applied before grubs hatch in the spring, summer and fall for 2 consecutive years. The times of year can vary somewhat as applications can be made any time the ground is not frozen. After that, the spores will continue to offer effective control on their own for several years. After the 6th application, control can last up to 10 years.
Application Rate: Milky Spore granules should be applied evenly with a drop spreader at the rate of 1 lb. per 350 sq. ft. or 20 lbs. per 7,000 sq. ft.
Environment: For use on lawns and other grassy areas around homes and on ornamental gardens, flower beds, mulched beds, vegetable gardens, ornamental ground covers and around trees and shrubs.
