Pecan Weevils

Pecan Weevil (Curculio caryae)

Pecan weevils infest pecan and hickory plants. Adult pecan weevils are light brown or grayish beetles with long beaks that are generally around 12 mm long. The larvae are fat, cream colored, legless, c-shaped, and around 9-15 mm long. Pecan weevils overwinter as larvae and adults in the soil.

Adults emerge from late July to October. Females lay eggs inside the kernels. No other pecan pest develops in kernels in the fields. The larvae feed in the nut for about 35 days, destroying the kernels. The infested nuts have pin-sized holes that may bleed, and nuts often drop.
