This ingenious product comes to us from Britain, where their damp summers and wet winters create the perfect breeding environment for slugs and snails. Combine that with their long and robust tradition of gardening and they know a thing or two about these creatures. This is where it gets interesting: to solve the slug problem, they turned to an ancient and well-loved commodity in the UK - wool. As it turns out, Gastropods can't tolerate wool. It draws moisture from their foot as they move across it and the scratchiness of the hooks and barbs in the wool fibers is extremely irritating to them. Faced with crossing this sort of barrier, slugs and snails will happily move on to another more comfortable food source.
Slug Gone is produced from 100% waste wool (also known as "shoddy"). This waste wool is what is left over after a sheep has been sheared. It consists of wool fibers and natural lanolin that are not suitable for making fabric. This shoddy is then compressed to make pellets. There is no additional processing or ingredients. This inventive way to use wool that would otherwise be discarded has been highly acclaimed in Britain and has won many green industry awards there. We are proud to be one of only a handful of companies to offer this here in the US.
You only need to apply Slug Gone once per season and it couldn't be easier to use: just place the wool pellets around a plant and water in. The wool will absorb the water and swell up to form a felted mat that will not wash out or blow away. Slug Gone not only protects your plants from slugs and snails, it also offers the following advantages:
- Biodegradable: Doesn't need to be removed at the end of the growing season and will biodegrade in 6-14 months.
- Soil Conditioner: Adds organic matter to your soil as it biodegrades.
- Versatile: Can be used in containers, flower beds, gardens and hanging baskets.
- Humane: Will not kill the slugs and snails. They can go on to do their important work for the environment somewhere besides your garden.
- Saves Water: Works like a mulch to help retain moisture in the soil and reduce water usage.
- Weed Control: Controls weeds in 2 ways: weed seeds find it difficult to germinate on the wool mat and it also forms an effective weed barrier.
- Climate Control: Keeps roots cooler in hot and dry climates.
- Soil Association Approved (UK equivalent to OMRI)
- Will not harm children, pets or edibles.
Suggested Uses: Use to form a barrier to protect your plants from slugs and snails.
For best results, apply Slug Gone in a 4-5" wide band around the base of the plant approximately ½" deep. Ensure there are no gaps. Water well. A 3.5 liter bag should cover:
- 15 - 6" diameter pots
- 6 - 10" diameter pots
Environment: Can be used in pots, flower beds, gardens, flower beds, nurseries, landscaping, greenhouses and vegetable plots.
Active Ingredients/Guaranteed Analysis: 100% British Wool
