Peach Tree Borers can cause devastating damage to peach trees, but also to plum, prune, cherry, almond, apricot, lilac, ash, rhododendron and nectarine trees. Females, when they are in their moth form, lay their eggs on tree trunks near the base of the tree. When those eggs hatch into larvae, they bore underneath the tree bark and begin feeding on the tree's roots, inner bark and other growing tissue. This is when they cause the most damage, so it is essential to prevent the borers from reaching this life stage.
There are several steps that one can take to stomp out borers, such as utilizing beneficial insects and beneficial nematodes, horticultural oils, and strategically applied insecticides. It can be difficult to know when to apply insecticides, so a trap is an excellent way to know when adults are flying and in search of mates. You can knockdown a considerable number of adults, especially the males, with this trap and lure. The lure contains a potent pheromone that entices the lovelorn male, and the trap has a powerful adhesive that traps them when they get too close. Females (and other insects) may also get trapped in the glue by chance. The traps will not catch all the adults around the tree, but they will give you a good indication when the moths are most active so that you can then use an insecticide on them.
