Codling moths (Cydia pomonella) are a major pest of apples, pears, walnuts, and quince trees that can easily destroy a whole crop. While control of these ravenous pests can be challenging, there are clear methods that work. We recommend the use of more than one method. Check out our codling moth control page for more information and to view our relative products.
Adult codling moths (the actual moths) do not damage plants; the damage is caused by their larvae (the caterpillars). Adult females lay their eggs on fruit, nuts, leaves, or spurs. Once the larvae hatches, they begin tunneling into the fruiting bodies of the plant, which renders the fruit unsightly and unsellable. These larvae, when left uncontrolled, can infest up to 90% of available fruit. It's not easy to control caterpillars, but we have many excellent products that get the job done.
If you chose to address these pests in their larval stage and were completely successful, you will not see any adult moths. But it can be hard to know how successful your efforts were, so you should add traps to your control protocol.
The Monterey Codling Moth Trap & Lure contains two sticky traps and two pheromone lures. These lures entice the male adult moths as they gather to mate. Once they get close enough they are caught on the sticky trap. This prevents them from mating and helps to break the reproductive cycle of the pest. Traps will help you monitor the pest population and allow you to decide whether further controls are warranted.
