Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) grubs can cause heartbreaking damage to even the most lovingly tended yard. As they feed on the tender grass roots, the grass will turn from green to yellow to brown and then die. Once the roots have been chewed off, the grass will easily fall to pieces in your hands. Without roots, the grass can often be rolled back like a carpet to reveal the ruinous grubs. These grass predators can be tricky to defeat, but you can gain control if you develop healthy soil and treat with Milky Spore and beneficial nematodes.

Milky Spore contains spores of the bacteria Paenibacillus popilliae (formerly Bacillus popillae) (originally developed by the USDA), which work specifically against the grub stage of the Japanese beetle. It poses no threat to people, animals, plants or beneficial insects. When Milky Spore is introduced into the soil, it will lie dormant until grubs begin feeding on roots where the bacterial spore is present. Once ingested by the grub, the spore will quickly begin to multiply inside the grub. These spores multiply at a tremendous rate; one single spore can multiply into 3 billion new spores in each host grub. These huge numbers of spores will kill the infected grub in about a week. The spores keep on working even after their host has died; as the grub decomposes, the billions of spores it contained are released back into the soil to start the whole process anew. Eventually, the spores will outnumber the grubs and create a soil environment that Japanese beetles simply cannot survive in.

To reach maximum spore levels in the soil and achieve best grub control, Milky Spore Granular should be applied before grubs hatch in the spring, summer and fall for 2 consecutive years (the times of year can vary somewhat, application can occur any time the ground is not frozen). After that, the spores will continue to offer effective control on their own for several years. After the 6th application, control can last up to 10 years.

Milky Spore Granular is formulated to be applied with a Drop Spreader. Please refer to the Manufacturer's label under the MSDS tab for applicable settings on your specific model of spreader.

A 20 lb. bag of Milky Spore Granules treats up to 7,000 sq. ft.

Milky Spore's effectiveness can be enhanced by the use of beneficial nematodes - specifically NemaSeek. This beneficial nematode is unharmed by Milky Spore and helps spread it as the nematode moves into the soil pursuing grubs, weevils and larvae in your soil. Apply Milky Spore dry, then water in the NemaSeek. for complementary control of pests in your soil.

For use on lawns and other grassy areas around homes and on ornamental gardens, flower beds, mulched beds, vegetable gardens, ornamental ground covers and around trees and shrubs.
