EASY STEPS TO COMPOSTING:
- Choose your composting style - either an open pile or a compost bin.
- Choose your composter location. A warm, open spot is best.
- Alternate layer, adding compost starter in between layers, in a composting bin. You can add it in one location and then turn the bin several times to homogenize all materials.
- Add kitchen and yard waste as they accumulate.
- Continue to add layers until your bin is full.
- How long it takes to finish your compost depends on the heat and how much you turn the pile. It could take anywhere between 4 months to a few weeks in a bin that is turned every day. Oxygen is the fuel to speed up the compost.
- Harvest your compost.
TO BUILD A COMPOST PILE:
- For a compost pile that is approximately 1 cubic yard (3' x 3' x 3') in size, start be designating an area approximately 5' x 5' in size.
- Put thick, coarse carbonaceous material (e.g., straw, leaves, and woody material) on the bottom approximately 6"-8" thick. This is the brown layer. This layer will help to facilitate air circulation and water drainage.
- Next, layer nitrogenous (e.g., grass clippings, kitchen waste, and fresh green material) material on top of the brown layer approximately 3"-4" per layer. This is the green layer.
- Apply Dr. Earth Compost Starter in a thin layer (approximately ½-1 cup) on top of the green layer.
- Alternate layers back and forth, wet on dry, green on brown, and Dr. Earth Compost Starter in between until the pile is complete.
