Trap & Monitor cucumber Beetle Populations

While cucumber beetles are common pests to plants in the cucurbit family (Cucurbitaceae), these voracious eaters happily feed on other plant varieties as well. This trap works by attracting adults with a pheromone lure; once they get too close, they become caught on the sticky trap and quickly perish. These traps only work on the adults; they do not kill the larvae. Close observation and alternative methods should be considered for more complete coverage.

Life Cycle & Damage: These beetles deposit their eggs in the soil around a plant's roots or under a leaf's surface. In 5-9 days, the larvae will hatch and begin tunneling through and feeding on a plant's roots and stems. During the 2-3½ weeks a larvae is developing, it will continue to live in and off of the plant. After this period, it moves to the soil to pupate. In just 4-10 days, the adults will emerge from the soil and start the process again. Cucumber beetles not only severely defoliate plants and damage fruit, they also serve as vectors for certain viral plant diseases.

Usage Rates: Lures last for 3-4 weeks once placed depending on the temperature. They may last longer in cooler temperatures.

  • Monitoring – Use 1 trap with lure per 2,000 sq. ft.
  • Trapping – Use 1 trap with lure per 400 sq. ft.
Suggested Uses: Use for trapping spotted and striped cucumber beetles on cucumbers, cantaloupe, winter and summer squash, pumpkins, gourds, watermelon and many other species of cucurbits.

This Product Controls These Pests or Diseases: This lure/trap can be used to monitor multiple species of cucumber beetle including Striped Cucumber Beetles (Acalymma vittatum), Western Striped Cucumber Beetles (A. vittatum), Spotted Cucumber Beetles (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi) and Western Spotted Cucumber Beetles (D. undecimpunctata undecimpunctata).

  1. Place lure on or near yellow sticky trap.
  2. Place trap at crop height when cucumber beetles are first spotted.
  3. Replace trap when filled with beetles or covered with dirt and debris.

Storage: Do not contaminate water, feed or food by storage or disposal. Store in a cool, dry place. Do not open until ready to use.

Cucumber beetle invasion

At the end of the 2022 summer, unusually hot and dry (though I'm afraid this might become the usual), there was a cucumber beetle explosion unlike anything I'd ever seen in 40+ years of gardening. I only use OMRI listed insect management methods, but nothing seemed to slow them down. They avoided the usual yellow sticky traps. I used the cucumber lure combo along with a 'chain' of yellow traps hanging below and above the lure trap and caught many hundreds. The odor isn't unpleasant and the lures remained viable for weeks - in fact, they are still attracting the remaining beetles. I do hope next spring doesn't start out with an epidemic of beetles, but if it does I'll reorder early and get on top of the problem.

I had an INFESTATION of those little pests! No sooner did I place the traps when I had to change the trap the next day! Within a week I was virtually free of the beetles and my plants survived and thrived, so happy!

Fly trap and not Cucumber beetle trap

My garden had lots of cucumber beetle infestation and tried this product after seeing good reviews. But this trap caught only one cucumber beetle in 2 weeks and it caught lots of flies. The beetles were still enjoying the amaranth plants that was right next to this trap. Even though this product is expensive, I bought this instead of just any yellow sticky trap because I thought the lure will attract the cucumber beetles to trap them. But it didn't work as it's intended to be and I really wished it did. I gave up and used my hand vac to suck the beetles and was able to get rid of atleast 20 of them easily. Will not recommend to buy this product again.

NO MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES AFTER INSTALLING THE CUCUMBER BEETLE TRAP, THE TRAP DREW THE INSECTS IN! UNFORTUNATELY I INSTALLED LATE IN THE SEASON. THIS IS OUR FIRST SEASON WITH CUCUMBER AND MEXICAN BEAN BEETLES. I WOULD LIKE ADVICE ON SQUASH BUGS. WE USE DE BT ECT. AND TRY TO STAY ORGANIC. WE VISIT THE GARDEN EACH DAY. WHAT I HAVE FOUND, THE NYMPH'S SEEK REFUGE IN THE CURLED LEAVES. SO WHEN WE APPLY THE DE AND BT THE CRITTERS HAVE A SAFE HAVEN. THE WAR CARRY'S ON!

Mixed feelings

I've never used this before, so didn't know what to expect. The product came fairly quickly, even though other sites were out of stock. The lure and trap need to be suspended from a horizontal stick. This does not come in the package . Any gardener bothering to go this route will likely have something that could be used. I rigged an old plant hanger which did the trick fine. What the advertisement does not tell you is that the product attracts many other types of insects, including bees and other beneficial insects. I got exactly 3 cucumber beetles and dozens of other insects. Admittedly, the "horses were already out of the barn in my case". This fall and next year, I will employ other preventative organic measures which one can read about. I will use the second trap upon first appearance of cucumber beetles and hopefully have more success than this year.

The beetle trap helped

I was picking 20 - 30 cucumber beetles by hand each day in the early mornings before I got the trap. After I put it up, I only had to pick about 10 beetles per day. It helps a lot. A couple of my cucumber plants got bacterial wilt which I think is caused by the beetles. Next year, I will put out the traps earlier in the season.

I've bought several of these, and they really work. While cucumber beetles remain a problem, somewhat, I shudder to think how bad they would be without the use of these traps. They last for several weeks, and catch lots of the buggers.

These traps DO catch CB. However, these traps are very small and really should be much larger for the cost- so only four stars.
