Chives are an easy to grow kitchen herb that is a member of the onion family. They show this heritage with its mild green onion flavor. Well-suited to container growing, they also make a beautiful addition to your outdoor garden. These long-lived plants should be grown in clumps and will be about 1-2 feet tall with bright green stems and abundant balls of lavender-pink flowers. Many destructive insect pests find chives repellent, so they make useful companions in flower and vegetable gardens. Both the leaves and the flowers are edible. To enjoy the leaves, simply snip them from the base of the plant; they can be chopped up and eaten fresh or frozen for later. The flowers make a pretty edible garnish. Try this perennial herb in salads and soups or on grilled veggies and potatoes.
