This interesting melon became widely popular in Victorian times. These vining plants are very fragrant, drought-tolerant, pest resistant and quite prolific. Although they will only grow about 18-24" high, they will spread out widely. You may want to trellis to control the masses of vines. Another option is to plant on the edge of your garden and allow them to grow out, where they may also serve to keep wildlife busy and away from your other crops. Fruit is somewhat bland, similar in taste and texture to a cucumber. Like cucumbers, they make excellent pickles (pick when young and green). When ripe, they shine in preserves (add berries or other fruit to enhance flavor), pies and butters.
