Originally from Asia, this bunching onion deserves a place in your garden and on your plate. Your garden will benefit from this addition; bees are drawn to the flowers, but many insects find the plant's odor repulsive and stay away. With a growth habit similar to a leek, this perennial plant will grow gracefully slender, deep green stalks with crisp white shanks. The tops will be hollow and can grow to 10-12" tall or more. The mild, sweet shanks will be about 1" in diameter and will not bulb out. These onions can really handle the weather; they will grow in areas that are cold and wet as easily as those that are hot and tropical. An enthusiastic producer with great frost resistance, the Ishikura can be continuously harvested from May through October and even overwintered. Eaten fresh or cooked, this onion is great at any growth stage and will retain its delicate sweetness even if left to grow as fat as a carrot. You can snip the tops, or pull it all up, and chop it into your meal. An important feature in Asian dishes such as miso soup, sukiyaki and stir frys, you will enjoy discovering the innumerable other ways it can be used.
