Real OrganicReal Easy Seed Starting Kit
The Real OrganicReal Easy Seed Starting Kit includes all any gardener needs to get started: seeds (tomato and basil, though selection changes seasonally), soil tablets, fertilizer, wooden plant markers, a garden almanac and, of course, DOT Pots. This great gift contains OMRI listed and USDA organic certified products. The kit contains enough to plant 8 DOT Pots. Easy planting instructions also accompany each kit.
DOT Pots are OMRI listed biodegradable plantable pots. DOT Pots are manufactured with natural ingredients: 80% wood fiber from sustainable thinning of spruce trees (no newspaper here) and 20% peat moss. No glue is added. This has two advantages first, it allows the plant roots to grow right through the pot. Secondly, air and water flow freely through the entire container without the need for drain holes. This creates a vigorous, non-girdled root system that spreads out evenly and uniformly and does not impede the growth of the plant. The pot does not hold water, which can cause mold problems, and if outdoors, excessive rain drains freely. When transplanted, the plant does not go into transplant shock, since the roots are ready to feed the plant from the moment it is transplanted.
The first kit features two popular plant seeds: Brandywine tomato (an heirloom pink beefsteak) and sweet basil. After Christmas in an ideal time to start tomatoes; basil can be grown indoors if you place the plant in a south-facing window where it will be exposed to the sun for at least 6 hours per day.
Throughout the year, this kit will offer other seeds, depending on the season.
Availability: Ships in 1-2 business days.

Earth-Friendly Option

I used five of these recently and loved the eco-friendly nature of the pots. While I used my own seeds and soil - I already had them ready to go when I purchased - I love the way that these "cups" breathe/drain. No chance of any toxins leaching in from the container and nothing to go into a landfill. The only thing to keep in mind is labeling. I tried using tape but it curled and fell off with waterings, so be sure to have garden markers handy or you won't know which seeds are which.
