Small, blue-black Mason Bees are nature's mild mannered, peaceful pollinators. In the last few years, the honeybee population has plummeted due to an invasion of foreign mites and viruses, but the Orchard Mason Bee population has NOT been affected. It is found throughout most of North America , particularly in wooded areas but often around homes in towns and cities. Mason Bees are unable to tunnel holes for their nests - they rely on existing holes of the right size. There the female collects pollen, lays her eggs and plugs up the holes. In the spring, the new generation of mason bees will emerge. By providing nesting sites, we can help these bees and keep them from finding other sites, like under siding or wood decks, while they provide us with better quality gardens and crops. This beautiful, handcrafted lodge is made from durable, recycled redwood and measures 11" X 5" X 5". As your population increases, add more lodges and watch your gardens grow!
