Worm Free Fruit - With Trichogramma Wasps
By: Jerry, Arbico Organics
June, 2007

Ah, those tasty fruits. Apples, peaches, plums, even grapes!...mouth watering jewels of the season. We love such bounty of the earth, and so do those pesky worms! Have no fear. With a little planning you can have a worm free season.

Trichogramma wasps are the early answer to protect your crop from damage. The wasps lay their eggs in the pest eggs, killing them. The adult wasps emerge anywhere from 7 to 75 days, depending on temperature and moisture. The preferred host eggs include borers, webworms, loopers, leafworms, fruitworms, cutworms, bollworms, and armyworms (except beet armyworms). Trichogramma wasps protect plants throughout the growing season. Release Trichogramma at first flight of moths and every 7-10 days thereafter until infestation subsides.

Now there is no need to cry if you were a little too late in using our friend here. We here at Arbico also carry a variety of products to assist you even if you see some worms. We have Btk, a great biodegradable microscopic organism which is non-toxic to humans, animals and the environment. And don’t forget our Spined Soldier Bugs, predators that feed on beetles, loopers, and pest worms.

You’ll be munching those apples in no time!
