Insect Traps - LuresInsect Traps and Monitoring Tools
There is no IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program that does not use traps. Traps are the first step in a series of steps whose goal is to provide a system that allows the grower to manage insect problems with a minimum of input.
There are many types of traps available. The most commonly used ones are the traps used for monitoring either with pheromone lures or with sticky substances that are affixed to colored surfaces that attract insects.
Pheromone Lure Traps
Pheromone traps utilize "bug hormones" or scents that stimulate the type of scent produced by the female insect to "seduce" or lure their male counterparts. Males lured into traps are prevented from mating. These traps assist the grower in determining the mating activity of the insect pest by counting insects trapped over a period of time. This information will enable a sound decision to be made regarding the timing for the release of beneficial insects and the use of organic repellants and insecticides to knock down large pest populations. All pheromone traps come complete and ready for use. Extra lures, baits, and sticky bottoms are also available to enhance duration of trap usage or for use in subsequent pest outbreaks.
Other traps do not use pheromones. Instead they use color and a sticky surface to lure and trap pests. These traps are also used for trapping to reduce the immediate pest population and also for monitoring purposes.
