Fungus GnatsFungus Gnat (Bradysia impatiens) are mosquito-like insects that are active in the summer. Adults are grayish or black and are 1/8 to 1/10 inches long.
Fungus gnats typically inhabit moist, warm, shaded areas. Some common hosts include: fungi, decaying wood, bedding plants, and foliage plants.
Fungus gnats will occupy homes and lay eggs in houseplants if the plants have been over-watered. Symptoms of fungus gnat infestation are sudden wilting, poor growth, yellowing, and foliage loss. After laying eggs in the surface of the soil, the females die. After emerging, fungus gnat larvae promptly burrow into the plant, soil, or other food source that they were born on to feed. The larvae look like maggots with small black heads and can damage the roots of plants and ruin mushrooms.
