One of the best beneficials to release this time of year in the garden is Podisus maculiventris, the Spined Soldier Bug. These great bugs are my favorites for taking care of the larger stages of pest insects common in the summer, especially large caterpillar pests and foliar feeding beetle larvae.

Oh no, here we go... the Japanese Beetles (Popillae japonica) have surfaced once again to begin their devastation of the garden. Beautiful little metallic green and copper creatures, just under a half an inch in length, you wouldn’t think they would be state enemy #1! Originally this pesky pest could only be found in states east of the Mississippi, but they have begun showing up in isolated populations as far west as California.

The root system is essential to the health of any plant, and like everyone else, those roots (and therefore the plant) need a little help from some friends. Roots of over 90% of all plants on earth form a necessary relationship with beneficial organisms known as mycorrhizal fungi.

The West Nile Virus has returned this season. With 265 reported cases and six deaths across the country health officials are concerned. "People should not wait on reports of cases of West Nile in their communities before taking personal precautions. We are all at risk," said Arizona Department of Health Services Director Catherine Eden
