Black ScaleBlack Scale (Saissetia oleae) Citrus scale and olive pest are found in California, Florida, and other Gulf states. They are black or dark brown in color and can be difficult to identify; many gardeners mistake them for natural plant deformities. They lay eggs in May/June but may extend to April/September. Scale are present year round and generally overwinter as eggs or as mated females. Scale are small parasitic insects that feed on plant juices, taking vital sugars from the plant. If infestation is severe, they can cause tree death. They also excrete honeydew that can cause the growth of a fungus known as sooty mold. This fungus interferes with photosynthesis and gives the plant an unappealing appearance.
