Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way

In Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way, the author Charles Dowding shares his techniques that ensure you will never have to till soil again, yet enjoy a delicious variety of fruits and vegetables organically grown in your own garden. The no-till method was first envisioned by Fukuoka in Japan. He refined it as he grew two rotated crops on his farm after World War II. Now Charles Dowding has made this method practical for the home gardener. Dowding has used an ingenious system of slightly raised beds with walkways between. He explains just about every possible way you could grow vegetables and fruit, including using polytunnels, greenhouses, and regular outdoor beds. His advice covers every phase of gardening, from designing your garden to obtaining the seed, to planting, to harvesting – and includes some fantastic recipes for your harvested produce.

Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way is divided into two sections. In the first section, which has eight chapters, Dowding explains his own techniques and gives advice on what to grow, pest control, growing from seeds, making compost, and using natural forces like the moon and our own “green thumbs.”

The second section of the book has eleven chapters, each devoted to a crop type. Types covered are summer salads; winter salads; alliums (garlic, onion, etc.); fruiting vegetables; cole crops; tomatoes, peppers, melons, eggplant, and spinach; herbs and edible flowers; tree fruits; and soft fruits. If you have ever imagined growing any of these delicious foods organically, Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way will be of help. Or if you already use organic methods, this book can show you how to produce better crops.

Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way has 4 sections of color inserts showcasing various fruits and vegetables as they are growing in the author’s garden or shortly after harvest. The 44 mouth-watering recipes included under various fruits and vegetables are a pleasant bonus. There are also two indices – one for the text, and a separate one for the recipes.

About the Author: Charles Dowding has grown organic vegetables commercially in Somerset, England since 1982. Using his own methods in partially-raised beds, he has not dug, except to remove perennial weeds or grasses, for 25 years. The climate in Somerset is similar to Portland, Oregon.
